Creamy Garlic Chicken

Some meals just have that special ability to instantly make you feel at home—and this Creamy Garlic Chicken is one of them.

I’ve been experimenting with a lot of Chicken Breast recipes and I’m quite taken with his one.

The combination of crispy chicken, rich and velvety garlic sauce, and a perfectly balanced blend of seasonings is mouth-watering.

I love that it goes with rice or a side salad.

Now whether you’re looking for a cozy weeknight dinner or something impressive for guests, this recipe delivers.

The best part?

It’s made with ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen.

You don’t need anything fancy—just fresh garlic, juicy chicken, cream, and a little love

. Pair it with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered noodles, and you’ll have a meal that feels like something out of a high-end restaurant—but without the high-end effort.

Let’s get into it!

A few tips:

Use fresh garlic instead of pre-minced. Whole cloves release a richer, sweeter garlic flavor when cooked slowly.

For an even deeper flavor, add a splash of white wine when deglazing the pan. It enhances the sauce and gives it a sophisticated touch.

Let the sauce thicken naturally. Avoid rushing this step; a slow simmer creates the best texture.

Add a little extra Parmesan for a cheesier sauce. The nutty flavor balances perfectly with the garlic and cream.

Use a meat thermometer to check doneness. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (75°C) to ensure perfectly cooked chicken.

Ingredients

  • For the Chicken:
  • 2 large boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut in half lengthwise (to make 4 thin cutlets)

  • 1 tsp salt

  • ½ tsp black pepper

  • ½ tsp paprika

  • ½ tsp garlic powder

  • ½ cup all-purpose flour

  • 2 tbsp olive oil

  • 2 tbsp butter

  • For the Creamy Garlic Sauce:
  • 8 cloves garlic, peeled and left whole

  • ½ cup chicken broth

  • 1 cup heavy cream

  • ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated

  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning

  • 1 tbsp Dijon mustard

  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes (optional, for a little heat)

  • 1 tbsp fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Directions

  • Prepare the Chicken. Begin by slicing each chicken breast in half lengthwise to create four evenly sized cutlets. This allows the chicken to cook faster and evenly. Season both sides of each piece with salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder, ensuring the flavors penetrate the meat. Lightly coat each piece in all-purpose flour, shaking off any excess. The flour helps create a light, crispy crust that locks in moisture while also thickening the sauce later.
  • Sear the Chicken to Golden Perfection. Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the butter melts and starts to foam, place the chicken into the skillet in a single layer. Allow it to sear undisturbed for about 4-5 minutes per side, until the exterior is golden brown and crispy. Avoid flipping too soon—letting it develop a crust ensures the best flavor. Once cooked through and crispy on both sides, remove the chicken from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
  • Sauté the Garlic. In the same pan, reduce the heat to medium-low and add the whole garlic cloves. Let them cook gently in the leftover butter and oil, stirring occasionally, for about 2 minutes. The garlic will become golden and slightly soft, releasing an incredible aroma. This slow-cooked garlic is the secret to an intensely rich, garlicky sauce without overpowering the dish.
  • Deglaze with Chicken Broth. Pour in ½ cup of chicken broth, scraping up any browned bits stuck to the bottom of the skillet. This process, known as deglazing, adds deep flavor to the sauce and prevents burning. Let the broth simmer for about 2 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
  • Create the Creamy Garlic Sauce. Reduce the heat to low and stir in 1 cup of heavy cream, ½ cup of grated Parmesan cheese, 1 tablespoon of Dijon mustard, and 1 teaspoon of Italian seasoning. If you like a little heat, add ½ teaspoon of red pepper flakes. Stir everything together, making sure the cheese melts into the sauce completely. Let the sauce simmer for 3-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens to a silky, smooth consistency.
  • Return the Chicken & Finish Cooking. Place the seared chicken back into the skillet, spooning the creamy garlic sauce over each piece. Cover and let the chicken simmer for 5 more minutes, allowing the flavors to soak into the meat. The sauce should thicken even more, and the chicken will be incredibly tender and juicy.
  • Garnish & Serve. Sprinkle with fresh parsley and serve immediately. This dish pairs beautifully with mashed potatoes, rice, or buttered egg noodles, soaking up every bit of that creamy garlic goodness.

  • This has become one of my favorite lunch recipes.

What to Serve with Creamy Garlic Chicken

  • Creamy Mashed Potatoes
  • Garlic Butter Green Beans
  • Buttered Egg Noodles
  • Crusty French Bread to soak up the sauce

Variations & Substitutions

Dairy-Free Version: Swap heavy cream for coconut cream and use dairy-free Parmesan. I always use coconut cream for most of my recipes since my partner can’t tolerate dairy.

Low-Carb/Keto: Serve with cauliflower mash instead of potatoes.

Spicy Version: Add more red pepper flakes or a dash of cayenne for extra heat.

Different Proteins: Substitute chicken with shrimp, pork chops, or even tofu for a different twist! I’ve tried tofu and it works!
